Ape with Bottle.

Taken from the medieval carvings C. 1450 found upon the Misericords within the choir stalls of Cartmel Priory. A most interesting and unusual carving that depicts a seated Ape holding a urine bottle high above his head. At the time when this scene was carved Apes and Monkeys were seen as animals with both intelligence and with a sense of mimicry. Although it can be seen with a definite sense of humour, the underlying message of this carving is that it is literally "taking the piss" out of the medical profession of the medieval period. This is a carving that has teachings of correct values and morals to its onlookers. One can clearly see the ill effect and bad state of health of the drink has on the Ape. This reproduction is taken directly from the original capturing all the fine detail applied by the craftsmen that carved this piece over 500 years ago. Comes with a wall fixing and product label.
