This medieval carving (c.1400) is from the choir screens from which you enter the choir at Carlisle Cathedral. This beautiful carving is of a Catholic Bishop wearing his Mitre. Although most of the carvings in Medieval Cathedrals are not of a religious nature this clearly shows the presence and importance of the role-played by the church authorities. The carving depicts a warm and welcoming person of authority from the church and someone that many would look upon for advice and comfort in a period of great uncertainty and troubles.
