Devil reading a scroll.

This has to be without doubt the most interesting and fascinating carving that we have reproduced from an original medieval Church or Cathedral Misericord carving. Seen here is the Devil holding a scroll while reading out aloud the list of names, these being the names of the sinners and more directly those that are being called and going to Hell. This carving is the left hand support and on the right are the jaws of Hell, this being a large mouth consuming humans and spitting out their remains. The central carving is a dishonest alewife being carried by demons off to hell for her misdemeanours. This Misericord in St. Laurence’s Church Ludlow is one of their main attractions and one that attracts a huge number of visitors and gains much attention and great admiration from an international audience. The moral teachings and importance of going to Church and being a good honest person paralleled along with the powers of the Church and the ruling authorities cannot be more evident and clear from this carving. This misericord was carved in the mid 15th century between 1433 - 1470 when work was carried out during a major rebuilding project to the church which saw an extended chancel and the height of the nave increased. The carving is in remarkable condition for being almost six hundred years old and the reproduction captures all the fine detail of the original.

Fitted with a D-ring for hanging and a product label, the size is approx 6 inches in height.
