Product Description

Medieval Dolphin / Sea Creature.

This is one of the most interesting of the reproductions we produce that have been taken from the Misericords of St. Laurence’s Church in Ludlow. The subject is of a Dolphin and shown in the typical medieval style of carving of the time depicting it as more of a mythical creature or sea monster.  The most unusual aspect of the carving is that the Dolphin is shown here with a large set of teeth, this most likely as the carver would have never seen a dolphin or known anything accurately about the creature. Carved in the 15th century it is one of a pair of Dolphins that are the supports to the main central carving of a mermaid, the meaning of this being the Mermaid being a temptress of men especially those with a connection to the sea. This reproduction captures all the fine detail from the original showing the skill of the medieval craftsmen that produced this carving 600 years ago, and represents a true piece of medieval English heritage and culture.

Fitted with a D-ring for hanging and a product label, the size is approx 6 inches wide.
