Little Ripon Bird.

Taken from the medieval carvings (1490 – 1495) from within the choir stalls of Ripon Cathedral on one of the lavishly ornate carved Misericords. This carving is of a small bird sitting within some foliage. The meaning and symbolism of this carving is taken from the Tree of Life, It is represented on the Misericord with two large leaves that make up the supports on each side. On each leave is a small bird in the centre, these are side carvings and within the centre is a large carving of a Wyvern. The literal meaning is that with the birds staying in the shelter of the tree safely away from attack from the wyvern it can be interpreted as the safety of the souls in the shadow of the Almighty. The Misericords are full of lavish carvings of roses and ornate foliage. Again like most of the carvings from Ripon this is in exceptional condition and recreated from the original carving with all the fine detail from the master craftsmen that carved them.
